What is a Young advisor?

Anticipation

A Young Advisor is a young person who advises the young mayor on how to spend their £25,000 budget to improve Lewisham for young people. The Young Advisors also do many of the same duties as the young mayor such as speaking at conferences and media appearances. The Young Advisors are made up of around 30 young people who represent different youth groups, schools or youth organisations around Lewisham.  Headed by a Chair the Young Advisors meet in the town hall every Monday in the council chamber, the Young Advisors are taken so seriously in Lewisham that they even have 2 desks in the mayor’s office!

The Young Advisors have had contact with a wide range of people and organisations in the past. Such people have come from places as far afield as Ireland, France, Czech Republic and South Africa.   They also have worked alongside organisations such as: 4Children, EU, The British Youth Parliament, The Metropolitan Police, the Department for Children’s Schools and Families, and all the national bodies of all the major political parties.

Lewisham’s Young Advisors are one of the most represented and respected Young People in the United Kingdom and Europe.

If you are interested in being a Young Advisor then there are several different ways to get involved:

  1. Stand in the Young Mayor elections and come either 1st 2nd 3rd or 4th in the elections.
  2. Join your School Council and talk to your teacher about being a representative.
  3. Get involved in a Youth Organisation or youth club and talk to who is in charge about becoming a representative.
  4. Or if you’re up for a challenge start your own Youth Club or Youth Organisation and when you have become established become your own group’s representative.

If you are interested in becoming a Young Advisor get in touch with us at the address on the contacts page.
